The Central Government has taken a major step towards modernising India’s coal sector by launching the Online Portal for Registration of Coal Exchanges.

With the portal now live, eligible companies can apply to establish and operate Coal Exchanges in the country.

The announcement was made by Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy in New Delhi.

Along with this, the government also confirmed that India Mining Week 2026 will be held in November in the national capital.

Coal Exchange Portal Is Now Live

The launch of the online portal marks the beginning of the operational rollout of India’s Coal Exchange framework.

Coal Exchanges will provide a digital platform where buyers and sellers can trade coal and processed coal products online.

The aim is to make coal trading more transparent, improve price discovery, and create a competitive marketplace.

The platform will also include several important features, such as quality checks through approved coal sampling agencies, market monitoring, secure payment and settlement systems, and a grievance redressal mechanism for users.

Registration Process Opens for Eligible Entities

Eligible organisations can now submit applications online to register and operate Coal Exchanges.

The Coal Controller Organisation (CCO), which has been appointed as the regulator, developed the application guidelines and online registration portal soon after the Coal Exchange Rules, 2026 were notified.

The entire registration process is digital. Applicants can complete registration, upload documents, pay fees through BharatKosh, submit applications, and track their application status online.

Once approved, a Coal Exchange registration will remain valid for 25 years.

New Legal Framework Supports the Initiative

The government said the Coal Exchange system has been introduced under the MMDR (Amendment) Act, 2025, which created the legal provision for Mineral Exchanges.

To implement the new system, the Ministry of Coal has also notified the Coal Exchange Rules, 2026, which lay down the guidelines for the registration and operation of Coal Exchanges across the country.

India Mining Week 2026 to Be Held in November

The government has also announced that India Mining Week 2026 will take place in November in New Delhi.

The event is expected to bring together more than 25,000 industry professionals and policymakers from India and abroad.

According to the government, the event is likely to feature over 500 exhibitors, around 300 mining and mineral companies, more than 1,000 government and public sector delegates, over 200 expert speakers, 100 conference sessions, and participants from more than 50 countries.

The event is expected to serve as a major platform for discussions on the future of India’s mining and mineral sector.
