The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) has become an important support system for farmers, especially when crops are damaged due to heavy rainfall, floods, pests or other natural disasters.
To encourage more farmers to protect their crops, the Central Government is observing Crop Insurance Month from July 1 to July 31.
During this campaign, farmers are being encouraged to insure their crops on time so they can avoid financial losses if their harvest is affected.
Farmers Can Apply for Crop Insurance Online
Farmers can apply for crop insurance through the PMFBY official portal, a Common Service Centre (CSC), a bank branch, or other online channels.
The government has simplified the digital application process, making it possible for eligible farmers to complete the application from the comfort of their homes.
Documents Required for PMFBY
Before applying, farmers should keep the following documents ready:
Aadhaar Card or another valid identity proof
Bank passbook
Bank account number and IFSC code
Mobile number
Land records (Khasra, Khatauni, Patta, etc.)
Details of the crop sown
Passport-size photograph (if required)
Relevant documents for tenant farmers, as per state government rules
Keeping these documents ready can help complete the application without delays.
How to Apply Online
Farmers can follow these steps to apply online under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana:
Step 1: Visit the official PMFBY portal and select the “Enroll Now” option under the Farmer Corner.
Step 2: If you are a first-time user, choose your state, scheme, season and year.
Verify your mobile number using the OTP and complete the registration by entering your personal, identity and bank details.
Step 3: After registration, log in using your mobile number and OTP.
In some states, such as Karnataka and Gujarat, applications are submitted through separate state portals.
Step 4: Fill in the required details related to your land, crop and bank account.
Upload the necessary documents and carefully verify all the information.
Step 5: Pay the insurance premium online.
Once your application is submitted successfully, save the receipt and application number for future reference.
What to Do After Submitting the Application?
After applying, keep your application number safe and regularly check your application status on the PMFBY portal.
If your crop is damaged due to floods, hailstorms, heavy rainfall or any other notified natural disaster, report the loss within the prescribed time through the Krishi Rakshak Portal or by calling the 14447 helpline.
Reporting the damage on time is important for the claim process.
Why Crop Insurance Is Important
Agriculture depends heavily on weather conditions, and unexpected natural disasters can lead to heavy financial losses for farmers.
The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana helps reduce this risk by providing financial support when insured crops are damaged.
Farmers are advised to complete their crop insurance registration before the deadline to ensure they receive the benefits of the scheme if needed.
