The Delhi government has announced a major new policy to encourage people to switch to electric vehicles (EVs) and help reduce pollution in the national capital.
On Monday, the Delhi Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, approved a new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy that offers subsidies of up to ₹50,000 on EV purchases.
The policy also includes a special incentive of ₹1 lakh for people who scrap their old BS-IV vehicles.
According to the Chief Minister, the proposal has now been sent to the Lieutenant Governor (LG) for final approval and is expected to come into effect from July 1, 2026.
Up to ₹50,000 Subsidy on Electric Vehicles
Under the new EV policy, buyers of different categories of electric vehicles will receive different benefits.
People purchasing electric two-wheelers, such as scooters and bikes, will get a subsidy of ₹30,000. Buyers of electric three-wheelers will receive a rebate of up to ₹50,000 during the first year of the policy.
The biggest benefit has been announced for owners of older BS-IV vehicles. If they scrap their old vehicles before September 30, 2026, they will receive direct financial assistance of ₹1 lakh.
The Delhi government has said that these benefits will remain available until March 31, 2030. However, hybrid vehicles will not qualify for any subsidy under this policy.
Delhi Plans to Phase Out Petrol and CNG Vehicles
The government has also announced a strict roadmap to gradually reduce the use of petrol, diesel, and CNG vehicles in the coming years.
From January 1, 2027, only electric auto-rickshaws will be allowed to be registered in Delhi. This means registrations of new diesel and CNG autos will be stopped gradually.
Similarly, petrol-powered two-wheelers will also be phased out over time. From April 1, 2028, only electric two-wheelers will be eligible for registration in the capital.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the decision as a historic step toward making Delhi cleaner and less polluted.
Massive Charging Infrastructure Plan
To support the growing number of electric vehicles, the Delhi government has prepared a large-scale charging infrastructure plan.
Under the proposal, around 32,000 new EV charging points will be installed across Delhi. The government has already identified land for setting up these charging stations.
Officials said that nearly ₹8,000 crore will be invested to strengthen the EV charging network and provide related tax benefits, ensuring that vehicle owners do not face charging problems in the future.
Commercial Vehicles Also Included
The new EV policy is not limited to private vehicles. It will also cover commercial vehicles, small cargo carriers, and rural service vehicles.
The Delhi government believes this policy will play a major role in reducing air pollution while encouraging people to shift to cleaner transportation options.
Waiting for Final Approval
Although the Delhi Cabinet has approved the policy, it will come into effect only after receiving final approval from the Lieutenant Governor.
Once approved, Delhi residents will be able to take advantage of subsidies on electric vehicles and incentives for scrapping older vehicles, making the transition to electric mobility more affordable than ever.
