HDFC Bank has introduced a two-day work-from-home arrangement for employees working in Business and Corporate Enabling Functions, according to sources.
The hybrid work policy has taken effect immediately and will remain in place for the next 30 days.
After that, the bank is expected to review the arrangement before deciding whether to continue it.
The move marks a partial return of hybrid work at a time when most companies in India have been asking employees to return to offices full-time.
Which Employees Will Get Work-From-Home?
The new arrangement applies only to employees in non-customer-facing roles.
This means:
Branch employees will continue working from offices
Customer services and banking operations will function normally
There will be no impact on regular banking services
HDFC Bank has not yet officially announced the policy publicly, but sources confirmed the temporary hybrid model is already active for eligible teams.
Why Has HDFC Bank Introduced Hybrid Work Again?
The decision comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens and organisations to reduce unnecessary travel and adopt fuel-saving measures wherever possible.
The Prime Minister encouraged:
Work-from-home arrangements
Online meetings
Reduced travel
Greater fuel conservation
The appeal came amid rising global crude oil prices and growing concerns over India’s fuel import costs due to tensions in West Asia.
Hybrid Work Returns Amid Rising Fuel Concerns
The banking sector had gradually reduced work-from-home policies after the pandemic, with most companies pushing employees back to offices over the last few years.
However, rising fuel prices and discussions around energy conservation have once again brought hybrid work into focus.
Following the Prime Minister’s appeal:
The Delhi government introduced a two-day work-from-home policy for its offices
Several employee groups have demanded formal hybrid work policies
Private companies are being encouraged to voluntarily consider similar steps
HDFC Bank’s move could now become an important example for other large private companies evaluating flexible work arrangements.
Temporary Trial or Long-Term Shift?
At present, the arrangement is only a short-term trial for selected departments.
Sources say the bank will review the policy after one month before taking any further decision.
For now, HDFC Bank appears to be balancing operational efficiency with fuel-saving concerns while ensuring customer-facing banking services remain unaffected.
