If you have an account with State Bank of India, this update is important. Banking services could be disrupted later this month due to a nationwide strike announced by employee unions.

The strike is expected to affect branch operations across the country and may lead to banks staying closed for up to four consecutive days.

When Will Banks Remain Closed?

The All India State Bank of India Staff Federation has announced a two-day nationwide strike. However, due to existing weekend holidays, the closure period could stretch longer.

Here’s how the situation may unfold:

Fourth Saturday – Banks closed

Sunday – Weekly holiday

Strike Day 1 – Employees on strike

Strike Day 2 – Employees on strike

Because of this sequence, SBI branches may remain shut for four continuous days in many parts of the country. There is also a possibility that the disruption could extend further if any additional holiday falls during this period.

Why Are SBI Employees Going on Strike?

The union has raised multiple concerns and submitted a list of demands to the bank’s management. Some of the key issues include:

1. Staff Shortage
Recruitment for support roles like messengers and security staff has been stalled for a long time. This has increased workload and raised security concerns in branches.

2. Pension and NPS Issues
Employees are demanding better benefits under the National Pension System. They also want additional allowances to be included while calculating pensions.

3. Opposition to Outsourcing
The union is against outsourcing various banking tasks to external agencies, as it may impact job security and service quality.

Before the strike, employees are planning protests, awareness campaigns, and demonstrations across the country, followed by submitting their demands to top government officials.

What Should Customers Expect?

If the strike goes ahead, several important banking services at branches could be affected. These include:

Cash deposits and withdrawals

Cheque clearing

Passbook updates

Loan-related services

In short, most branch-based work may come to a standstill during the strike period.

Digital Services Will Still Work

There is some relief for customers. Online and digital services like mobile banking, internet banking, ATMs, and the YONO SBI app are expected to function normally.

Still, it’s a good idea to complete any urgent banking work in advance to avoid last-minute problems.
