After decades of using heavy red steel LPG cylinders, India is now shifting to a new generation of plastic or composite LPG cylinders.

These cylinders are designed to make cooking gas safer, lighter, and more convenient for households across the country.

Why the Change Was Needed

Traditional steel cylinders are strong but heavy, prone to rust, and hard to lift.

They also make it difficult to know how much gas is left, which can lead to unexpected shortages.

Many users, especially those who replace or install cylinders themselves, have long struggled with handling and monitoring them.

The new composite cylinders address these issues and promise a safer and more user-friendly alternative.

What Makes Plastic LPG Cylinders Better

Lightweight and Durable: Cylinders like Bharatgas Lite from BPCL are made from advanced composite materials.

They weigh more than 50% less than traditional steel cylinders of the same capacity and do not rust or corrode.

Enhanced Safety: Composite cylinders are built to withstand high pressure and are less likely to fragment on impact.

In case of fire, the material responds in a controlled way, reducing the risk of sudden ruptures.

Easy Gas Monitoring: Many new cylinders are translucent, allowing users to see the remaining gas level at a glance.

This reduces guesswork and helps plan refills efficiently.

Rollout and Availability

The lightweight LPG cylinders were first launched in Goa and showcased at India Energy Week 2026.

They are expected to expand to at least 10 cities initially, with plans for nationwide availability in major metros.

Households can swap existing steel cylinders for a composite one with a small additional deposit.

New connections with the plastic cylinder require a specified security deposit.

What It Means for Indian Households

As more homes adopt these cylinders, millions of users can enjoy easier handling, improved safety, and better visibility of gas levels.

Over time, composite LPG cylinders are expected to become the new standard in Indian kitchens, making daily cooking more convenient and secure.
