Strict Penalties if Someone Misuses Your SIM Card

If someone else uses a SIM card in your name for fraud, you could also be considered a criminal under the law.

The government has introduced a new action plan to prevent such fraud.

Strict action can now be taken against anyone who unknowingly obtains SIM cards in their own name and then allows others to use them for illegal purposes.

This decision comes due to the rising misuse of smartphone IMEI numbers.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has warned people to keep their smartphones and mobile connections secure to prevent misuse.

What Does the New Rule Say?

According to a report by TelecomTalk, the new rule was announced on November 24th. Its main goals are to:

Expand mobile connectivity quickly

Strengthen mobile security

Reduce cyber fraud and the misuse of mobile numbers

With the growth of 5G networks, millions of people now have high-speed internet access.

But as mobile network reach expands, misuse of IMEI numbers has become a serious concern. This prompted the government to implement these new regulations.

How to Keep Your Mobile Safe

You can protect your mobile phone and connection using the “Sanchar Saathi” app or portal. It allows you to check whether your phone and SIM are secure.

Many people buy second-hand phones without proper checks. These phones could be stolen or linked to fraudulent activity, which could cause legal trouble later.

Penalties Are Severe

Under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, tampering with IMEI numbers or obtaining SIM cards using false documents is a crime.

If caught, you could face:

Up to 3 years in prison

A fine of ₹5 million, or both

Most importantly, this is a non-bailable offense, meaning bail will not be easily granted.
