Big news for WhatsApp users: Microsoft announced on Tuesday that its Copilot AI chatbot will stop working on WhatsApp.
This change follows WhatsApp’s updated Business API policy, which now prevents AI chatbots and developers from using WhatsApp Business solutions.
Microsoft is the second major AI provider to do this, after OpenAI, which removed its chatbot in October.
When and How Copilot Will Be Discontinued
According to a Microsoft blog post, the Copilot chatbot will be discontinued on WhatsApp on January 15, 2026, the same day WhatsApp’s new policy comes into effect.
Microsoft is working to ensure users can smoothly transition and continue using Copilot on mobile, web, and PC platforms.
Saving Your WhatsApp Chats
Conversations with Copilot on WhatsApp will not transfer to other Copilot platforms because they will be unauthenticated.
Users who want to keep their chats should export them using WhatsApp’s export tool before January 15, 2026.
Where You Can Still Use Copilot
After leaving WhatsApp, Copilot will still be available:
On the web at copilot.microsoft.com
On the Copilot mobile app for iOS and Android
These platforms provide the same core features as WhatsApp and some additional capabilities that were not available through WhatsApp integration.
It’s also important to note that, following WhatsApp’s updated rules, ChatGPT will no longer work on WhatsApp after January 15, 2025.
Users can link their ChatGPT account to WhatsApp, and past conversations will still appear in the ChatGPT app under the History section.
