ChatGPT adds Group Chats to make Teamwork Easier

OpenAI has officially launched a new social app-style feature in ChatGPT called Group Chats.

Just two days ago, a tipster revealed that this feature was being tested, and now the rollout has begun.

For now, it is available only in a few regions so the company can gather user feedback.

Similar to WhatsApp groups, ChatGPT users can create a group and invite others through a shared link.

The goal is to make collaboration easier for friends, teams, and colleagues working on shared tasks or projects.

What the New Group Chat Feature Offers

OpenAI wants ChatGPT to evolve into an “everything app,” and this new update is another step in that direction.

After recently introducing its AI video-sharing app Sora, the company is now adding a group chat feature for collaborative use.

To create a group, users need to tap the people icon in the top-right corner.

They will then be guided to generate an invite link that can be shared with other ChatGPT users.

Everyone must be logged in to create or join a group, and each group can include up to twenty members.

When someone joins or creates a group for the first time, they must set up a profile with their name, username, and photo.

This helps group members recognize one another.

In group conversations, ChatGPT has been trained to behave more socially.

It decides when to reply and when to stay silent, depending on the flow of the conversation.

Users can also directly mention “ChatGPT” when they want a response. Additionally, ChatGPT can now react to messages using emojis.

The group chats are powered by GPT-5.1 Auto, which chooses the most suitable AI model based on the user’s plan—Free, Go, Plus, or Pro.

Where the Feature Is Rolling Out

The Group Chat feature is currently available to ChatGPT users in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.

OpenAI will gather feedback from these regions before expanding the feature to the rest of the world.
