There’s important news for highway travelers across India. The government has announced new toll payment rules that will take effect from November 15, 2025.
Under the revised system, drivers crossing a toll plaza without a FASTag will now have to pay higher charges.
However, there’s some relief for those making digital payments.
What the New Rule Says
According to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the National Highway Fee Collection Rules, 2008 have been amended. The new provisions are:
If a vehicle enters a toll plaza without a FASTag and pays in cash, it will be charged double the regular toll fee.
If the driver pays through UPI or any other digital mode, the charge will be 1.25 times the regular toll fee.
Example:
If the toll fee is ₹100:
FASTag working → ₹100
FASTag fails and payment made in cash → ₹200
FASTag fails and payment made digitally → ₹125
This means digital payment users will save money, while cash payers will face higher charges.
Why the Change Was Introduced
MoRTH explained that the update aims to make toll collection more transparent, reduce cash transactions, and encourage digital payments.
The ministry also said the move will help reduce long queues, making highway travel faster, smoother, and safer.
Who Benefits the Most
This rule especially helps drivers whose FASTag is not working or has expired.
They can now avoid paying double toll by opting for UPI or other digital payment methods, ensuring a more convenient travel experience.
