If you don’t have a FASTag, there’s good news. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has reduced the extra penalty charges at tolls.
From November 15, 2025, non-FASTag users paying through UPI will be charged 1.25 times the toll fee instead of double.
New Toll Payment Formula
A normal FASTag vehicle pays ₹100 at the toll.
Earlier, a non-FASTag vehicle had to pay ₹200 (2x).
Now, if you pay through UPI, you’ll only pay ₹125 (1.25x).
This change will help drivers who cannot use FASTag due to temporary issues or technical problems.
Cash Payments Still Cost Double
Vehicles paying by cash will still be charged double the toll (2x). The government wants to cut down on cash transactions and promote digital payments like UPI.
Free Pass if System Fails
If a vehicle has a valid FASTag but the toll system fails to recognize it, the vehicle will be allowed to pass without paying. This rule ensures accountability of toll operators.
FASTag’s Growing Impact in India
FASTag adoption has reached 98%.
The average wait time at toll plazas dropped to 47 seconds in 2022.
It has also reduced cash leakage and improved revenue transparency.
FASTag Annual Pass
The government also launched a FASTag Annual Pass for ₹3,000 per year, covering 200 trips on national highways and expressways.
Additionally, damaged FASTags can now be ported to a new one.
