EV Policy 2025: Toll-Free Travel for Electric Vehicles

The Maharashtra government has taken a major step to promote eco-friendly transportation.

From August 22, 2025, electric vehicles (EVs) are completely toll-free on some major roads in the state.

These include Atal Setu (Mumbai-Navi Mumbai), Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and Samruddhi Mahamarg (Mumbai-Nagpur).

This decision has been made under the Motor Vehicles Tax Act, 1958, and approved by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde,

and Ajit Pawar. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik confirmed the decision in a press conference.

He also clarified that the toll exemption will be available on important routes like Atal Setu, Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and Samruddhi Mahamarg.

Experts’ Opinion

Experts believe that this move will encourage more people to shift to electric vehicles. It will also reduce operational costs for both private owners

and commercial operators, strengthening Maharashtra’s EV ecosystem and possibly inspiring other states to adopt similar policies.

Who Will Benefit?

All types of electric vehicles will get toll exemption, including private cars and buses. Especially, M2, M3,

and M6 category EVs—which include private four-wheelers and state/private buses—are eligible.

Long-Term Benefits of the Policy

This toll exemption is part of Maharashtra’s broader EV mission to cut down on carbon emissions, control pollution, and boost clean transportation.

The state’s EV policy, released in April 2025, had already mentioned benefits like toll waivers on highways.

With this initiative, Maharashtra is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable development

and clean mobility, ensuring long-term positive impacts on the environment and clean energy goals.
