For mountain travel lovers, there’s exciting news. Soon, the distance between Dehradun and Mussoorie, which usually takes about 90 minutes by road, will be covered in just 20 minutes.
The 34-kilometer stretch is being transformed by a new ropeway system. The 5.2-kilometer-long mono-cable gondola system will cut down travel time significantly.
Currently, there are no direct trains between Dehradun and Mussoorie, so people travel by bus, taxi, or private vehicle.
This ropeway will offer a faster and more comfortable option for those looking to travel quickly.
A 300-Crore Plan
The new ropeway promises to offer an entirely different travel experience, giving passengers the pleasure of soaring at a height while enjoying the views.
Mussoorie Sky Car Private Limited is constructing this impressive ropeway, which will be the longest passenger ropeway in India. The project will cost around Rs 300 crore.
First announced at the Interalpin 2023 event in Innsbruck, Austria, this ropeway will blend luxury with natural beauty, offering a unique, memorable journey for passengers.
When Will It Start?
The sky car service will begin in September 2026, making travel between Dehradun and Mussoorie easier and faster.
This 5.2-kilometer-long gondola line will rise 1,000 meters above the ground, offering stunning views of the Shivalik hills, dense forests, and mist-covered hilly paths.
While the road distance of 33 kilometers currently takes about 2 hours, the ropeway will complete the journey in just 20 minutes.
Open Year-Round
The ropeway is being developed by FIL Industries, SRM Engineering, and the French company POMA SAS. It will be fully electric and operational throughout the year, in all seasons.
Built to European safety standards, the gondola system will feature parts manufactured in India, boosting the local manufacturing sector and creating job opportunities. The system will be regularly monitored for safety and reliability.
Capacity and Comfort
This 20-minute air journey will offer a peaceful, comfortable experience, away from the city’s crowds.
The ropeway will carry up to 1,300 passengers per hour in one direction. The cable cars will have seating for 10 people, with automatic doors and proper ventilation.
Even in bad weather, safety measures will be in place, ensuring a secure ride.
Environmentally friendly, this system will help reduce traffic, pollution, and carbon emissions, all while preserving nature.
