The Modi government has approved the 8th Pay Commission, leading to widespread anticipation among central employees about their salary increases.
Reports suggest that the fitment factor, which determines the salary hike, could range between 1.92, 2.08, and 2.86.
If the fitment factor is set at the highest of 2.86, the minimum basic salary could rise from Rs 18,000 to Rs 51,480.
This article explains how salaries of central employees may increase according to different fitment factors and levels.
How Will the Salary Be Decided in the 8th Pay Commission?
The 8th Pay Commission is expected to be implemented in early 2026. In January, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav confirmed that Prime Minister Modi has approved the commission.
The chairman and two members of the commission will be appointed soon, although no further updates have been provided.
The commission will review salary and pension revisions and submit its report to the government, which will then decide the salaries and pensions.
What is the Fitment Factor?
The basic salary of central government employees is based on the fitment factor. A higher fitment factor leads to a higher salary.
In the 7th Pay Commission, the fitment factor was set at 2.57, raising the minimum basic salary from Rs 7,000 to Rs 18,000.
Reports suggest that the fitment factor in the 8th Pay Commission could range between 1.92, 2.08, and 2.86.
How is the Basic Salary Decided Based on the Fitment Factor?
The formula for calculating the new basic salary is:
New Basic Salary = Existing Basic Salary × Fitment Factor
