Reliance Jio is introducing a new calling technology called VoNR (Voice over New Radio) for its users.
Jio will be the first company to offer this service, which enhances voice quality by reducing background noise and providing HD audio.
VoNR also lowers latency, improving communication, and boosts network efficiency.
VoNR vs. VoLTE: What’s the Difference?
Currently, Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and Jio use VoLTE (Voice over LTE) for calling, which operates on 4G networks. VoNR, on the other hand, is designed for 5G networks.
It offers better voice quality, reduced latency, and improved network efficiency when used on 5G.
VoNR is specifically tailored for the 5G network, making it a significant upgrade over VoLTE.
Jio’s Progress and Competitors’ Plans
Jio has already rolled out VoNR in Delhi and Mumbai, with plans to expand to more areas across India soon. In contrast, Airtel and Vi have not yet deployed this technology.
Airtel has not launched 5G SA (Standalone) yet, and there’s no information about its 2025 rollout.
Similarly, Vi is expected to use 5G NSA (Non-Standalone), meaning they won’t be able to offer VoNR in the near future. As of now, Jio remains the only option for users seeking VoNR service.
Challenges for Airtel and Vi
Airtel has not yet deployed 5G SA (Standalone), and there is no confirmation about its plans for this year. As a result, Airtel customers may have to wait a long time for VoNR.
Similarly, Vi will use 5G NSA (Non-Standalone) like Airtel, which means it will also not offer VoNR anytime soon. For now, Jio is the only option for customers seeking this advanced service.
