WhatsApp has introduced one of its biggest updates for desktop users.
For the first time, people can make and receive audio and video calls directly through WhatsApp Web without installing the WhatsApp desktop application.
The update also brings several new features, including call transfer between devices, waiting rooms for group calls, HD video quality, AI-powered noise suppression, screen sharing, and a dedicated Calls tab.
The new features are being rolled out gradually and will be available to all eligible users over the coming weeks.
Make Audio and Video Calls Directly From Your Browser
Until now, WhatsApp users needed the mobile app or the desktop application to make voice and video calls.
With the latest update, you can now make and receive individual as well as group audio and video calls directly from supported web browsers such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
WhatsApp says all browser-based calls will continue to be protected with end-to-end encryption, offering the same level of privacy as the mobile and desktop apps.
No Need to Install the Desktop App
This update is especially useful for people who work on office or shared computers where installing software is not allowed.
WhatsApp Web now also includes a dedicated Calls tab, making it easier to access recent calls, favourites, and call history.
Users can also enjoy features like screen sharing and emoji reactions during calls directly from the browser.
Transfer Ongoing Calls Between Devices
WhatsApp has introduced a new Call Transfer feature that lets users move an ongoing call from one device to another without disconnecting.
For example, you can start a call on your smartphone while travelling and switch it to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app after reaching home or the office.
This makes it much easier to continue long conversations without interruption.
Better Control Over Group Calls
Another useful addition is the Waiting Room feature for group calls.
When creating a call link, hosts can enable the “Require approval to join” option.
Anyone joining through the link will stay in a waiting room until the host approves their request.
This adds an extra layer of privacy and security for meetings, online classes, and group discussions.
HD Video and Clearer Voice Calls
WhatsApp has also improved the quality of voice and video calls.
The new QuickHD feature delivers high-definition video much faster after a call starts, reducing the waiting time for better picture quality.
The platform has also introduced AI-powered Noise Suppression, which reduces background noise and makes voices clearer, even in noisy surroundings.
WhatsApp Web Becomes More Powerful
With browser-based calling and several new features, WhatsApp Web is now much closer to the desktop app in terms of functionality.
