The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a wide-ranging weather alert across India, highlighting a mix of thunderstorms, heavy rain, heatwave conditions, and gusty winds in different regions.

One of the key updates is a yellow alert for Delhi and NCR, where residents can expect light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and winds reaching 30–50 kmph.

While this may bring temporary relief from rising heat, the weather will remain unstable.

Delhi Weather: Rain, Storms and Rising Heat

Delhi has been experiencing unusually warm conditions, with the minimum temperature touching around 24°C, the highest so far this season.

Day temperatures may stay close to 39°C, even with occasional rain.

According to IMD, thunderstorms are likely at several places across Delhi-NCR.

These short spells of rain may provide brief relief but will not significantly reduce the overall heat.

India’s Weather Split: Heatwave in Some Regions, Rain in Others

The bigger picture shows a sharp contrast in weather conditions across the country.

While northern and eastern parts are seeing rain and storms, central and eastern India continue to face heatwave conditions.

States like Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh are expected to remain under heat stress for several days.

At the same time, coastal regions are dealing with hot and humid weather, making conditions uncomfortable despite no extreme temperatures.

Heavy Rain, Snow and Storms in Different Regions

Northeast India: Continuous Rain Activity

States like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya are expected to receive heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and strong winds, which may lead to local disruptions in hilly areas.

Northwest India: Rain, Snow and Hail Alert

Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand may see rainfall, snowfall, and even hailstorms.

Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan are also likely to experience scattered rain with strong winds.

East India: Rain and Thunderstorm Spell

Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Sikkim are expected to see light to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over the next few days.

Central, West and South India Weather Update

Central India will see limited but scattered rainfall, especially in Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh after earlier heatwave conditions.

In West India, parts of Maharashtra including Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra may experience thunderstorms and rain.

South India is also under active weather conditions, with states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala expected to see rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds.

Some regions in North Interior Karnataka may also face hailstorms.

Heatwave Warning: Which States Are Affected?

The IMD has also warned of continuing heatwave conditions in several states:

Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh: April 17–19

Odisha: April 17–20

Jharkhand: April 19–21

Telangana, Rayalaseema, Marathwada: April 17–18

In addition, Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and parts of West Bengal are expected to face hot and humid conditions, increasing discomfort levels.

Temperature Trend Across India

IMD forecasts a mixed temperature pattern:

Some regions may see a slight fall of 2–3°C after April 19

Others, especially East India, may witness a rise of 3–4°C before stabilising

Northwest India may see temporary fluctuations but no major long-term change

Safety Advisory for Residents

The IMD has advised people to stay cautious during this volatile weather phase.

In heatwave areas, residents are urged to:

Stay hydrated

Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours

Stay in cool or ventilated spaces

In thunderstorm-prone regions, people should avoid open areas due to the risk of lightning strikes and strong winds.

Final Outlook

India is currently experiencing a highly mixed weather pattern—heatwaves in some regions and heavy rain or storms in others.

The situation is expected to remain active over the coming days, making it important for residents to stay updated with local IMD alerts.
