Google Gemini Buy Button testing in India could make online shopping more convenient by allowing some users to purchase selected Flipkart products directly from Google’s AI-powered search experience.
The feature is currently being tested with a limited number of users and products.
The test covers selected categories such as smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories. Google is expected to expand the feature to more users in October, ahead of India’s festive shopping season.
Google Gemini Buy Button Testing Begins
According to the report, some Flipkart products appearing in Gemini and Google’s AI Mode now have a Buy option displayed alongside them.
When users tap the button, they are taken to a Flipkart-branded checkout flow to complete the purchase.
The option is not available to every user at present. Some users can see Flipkart products in Google’s AI results but do not see a Buy button next to them.
Amazon products can also appear in Google’s AI results, but the report said no similar Buy button was seen alongside them during the testing.
How the Gemini Buy Button Works
The Gemini Buy Button is designed to reduce the steps involved in buying products discovered through Google’s AI shopping experience. Instead of leaving the AI results to separately search for the product on an e-commerce platform, eligible users can tap the purchase option.
The checkout experience currently appears to retain Flipkart branding. Details about the technology powering the specific test and how the purchase flow is integrated have not been disclosed.
Google Expands AI Shopping Plans
Google has been developing AI-powered shopping tools that can assist consumers through different stages of the shopping journey.
The company has also introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard intended to help AI agents interact with retailers.
The Flipkart test appears different from a checkout hosted entirely by Google because the purchase flow shown during testing carries Flipkart branding.
Google had previously included Flipkart among merchants involved in its agentic shopping experience in India. In 2024, Google also invested about $350 million in Flipkart as part of a Walmart-led funding round.
Buy Button May Affect Affiliate Shopping
The expansion of direct AI purchasing could have implications for affiliate marketing and deal-focused websites. A user who discovers a product in Gemini
and completes the purchase through the Buy button may not need to visit a separate review or deals website.
However, Google and Flipkart have not clarified how affiliate links or referral tracking would work with this shopping experience.
The reported expansion is expected in October, before Flipkart’s Big Billion Days Sale 2026 begins for all customers on October 9.
