Good news for Indian travelers. Germany has removed the airport transit visa requirement for Indian citizens who are travelling to another country through a German airport.
The German Embassy announced the change on Tuesday, making travel easier for thousands of Indians who use German airports as transit hubs every year.
New Rule Effective From June 3
According to the embassy, the new rule came into effect on June 3, 2026.
This means Indian citizens no longer need an airport transit visa if they are simply changing flights at a German airport while travelling to another country.
A large number of Indian students, professionals, and tourists travel through Germany on their way to destinations across Europe, North America, and other regions.
Germany Aims to Strengthen Ties With India
In an official statement, the embassy said that the notification removing the airport transit visa requirement for Indian citizens was published in the Federal Law Gazette on June 2, 2026.
The German government said the decision reflects its commitment to strengthening India-Germany relations, promoting easier movement of people, and boosting economic cooperation between the two countries.
The embassy also noted that the move comes after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India in January this year.
France Had Announced Similar Relief Earlier
Germany is not the only European country to ease transit rules for Indians.
In April, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said that France had also introduced a visa-free transit system for Indian citizens passing through the European territory of France.
The latest decision by Germany is expected to make international travel smoother and more convenient for Indian passengers flying through Europe.
