Gemini Call for Me is a new Google AI feature that can make phone calls to businesses on a user’s behalf.
The feature is designed for tasks such as checking service prices, confirming store timings, booking tables and rescheduling appointments.
Many people now prefer WhatsApp messages and social media DMs instead of phone calls. However, some tasks still require speaking with a business.
Google’s new feature aims to handle these calls automatically, including waiting on hold and talking to staff.
What Can Call for Me Do?
The Call for Me feature allows users to ask Gemini through the mobile app to contact a business for a specific task. Users can provide details about what they want the AI to find out or arrange.
For example, Gemini can call a restaurant to ask about availability, check the opening and closing hours of a store or find out the price of a particular service.
Google says the feature can also handle more complicated requests. It can ask a hardware store whether a particular tool is available or contact a business to reschedule an appointment.
During a call, Gemini can introduce itself, navigate automated phone menus and speak with business representatives. It can also remain on hold until someone from the business becomes available.
Google has previously introduced AI calling tools such as Duplex and Ask for Me. Call for Me builds on this type of technology by allowing Gemini to handle a wider range of business-related calls.
How to Use Gemini Call for Me
Users can access the feature through the Gemini mobile app by starting their prompt with “@Call for me.” They can then provide specific information, including the date, time and other preferences related to the task.
For example, a user can ask Gemini to call a restaurant and book a table for two at a specified time.
Before making the call, Gemini shows a summary of the planned action. This includes the phone number it will call and the information it plans to share.
Users can review this information and make changes before giving Gemini permission to place the call.
Users Can Monitor the Call
Once Gemini starts the call, users can view a live transcript and listen to the audio. They also have the option to cancel the call at any time.
Users can take over the conversation themselves if needed. If they choose to take over, Gemini informs the person on the other end and ends its part of the call.
The feature has certain restrictions. Gemini cannot make emergency calls or make payments on behalf of users. It also cannot share sensitive personal information such as passwords.
Who Can Use This Feature?
The Call for Me feature is currently available only in the US to users aged 18 or above who have a Pixel 11 series device.
The feature is currently in beta and requires a paid Gemini AI subscription. There is also a daily limit on the number of calls Gemini can make.
At present, Gemini can only make calls to US phone numbers. Google is initially rolling out the feature on a limited scale because real-life conversations can involve many different situations and nuances.
The company plans to use this early rollout to refine the feature before making it available more widely.
