On the occasion of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed the people of the state through a special letter.

In his message, he emphasized that respecting elders is not just a tradition but a core part of Indian culture and civilization.

The Chief Minister expressed concern over the growing distance within families and the increasing number of old-age homes across the country.

He said this trend should make society reflect on how it treats its elderly members.

Rising Number of Old-Age Homes a Matter of Concern

CM Yogi said that many elderly people are spending their later years alone despite dedicating their lives to their families and children.

According to him, modern lifestyles and employment opportunities often force younger family members to live away from home.

While many may want to care for their parents, distance and circumstances sometimes make it difficult.

However, he stressed that elderly people need emotional support, affection, and companionship the most during this stage of life.

Unfortunately, many seniors face neglect or mistreatment from their own families.

The Chief Minister also noted that courts, including the Supreme Court, have repeatedly reminded society about its responsibility towards parents and elders.

Parents Hold the Highest Place in Indian Culture

Highlighting the values of Sanatan culture, CM Yogi said that parents and teachers have always been given the status of God.

He referred to the story of Lord Ganesha, who considered his parents, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, to be his entire universe.

By circling his parents instead of the world, Lord Ganesha demonstrated that parents deserve the highest respect.

The Chief Minister also mentioned Shravan Kumar, known for his devotion to his parents, and Lord Ram, who accepted 14 years of exile to honor his father’s promise.

According to CM Yogi, these stories continue to teach the importance of respecting and caring for elders.

Respecting Elders Is a Part of Our Tradition

The Chief Minister said that Sanatan culture is not limited to religious rituals.

It is a way of life built on family values, social responsibility, and mutual respect.

He explained that the tradition of touching the feet of elders and seeking their blessings reflects the importance of their experience, wisdom, and guidance.

Respecting senior citizens, he said, has always been one of the strongest pillars of Indian society.

Government Announces ₹1,500 Monthly Pension

CM Yogi also highlighted welfare measures taken by the state government for elderly citizens and destitute women.

He announced that eligible elderly people and destitute women will receive a monthly pension of ₹1,500 to help them live with dignity and financial security.

In addition, destitute women will be linked to healthcare schemes such as Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana.

They will also be eligible for housing benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and Chief Minister Awas Yojana.

CM Yogi Urges Elderly to Adopt Yoga

The Chief Minister encouraged senior citizens to take care of both their physical and mental health.

He urged them to make yoga a regular part of their daily routine, saying they have already contributed greatly to their families, society, and the nation.

Referring to International Yoga Day on June 21, he said this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Aging,” highlights the importance of helping older people stay healthy, active, and independent.

According to CM Yogi, the theme is not just a slogan but a commitment to ensuring respect, good health, and a dignified life for senior citizens.
