New Delhi:
In a significant move for the tech giant, Google has announced the discontinuation of its Play Movies and TV service, set to take effect from January 2024.
This decision marks a pivotal moment for Google,
which has been a global leader in search platforms and has provided diverse services ranging from the Play Store to Gmail and beyond.
Background of Google’s TV Platform
The Play Movies and TV service was initially introduced in 2020, succeeding Movies and TV.
Functioning as a mobile app, it became a part of the array of Google services available to users.
However, in October, the app underwent a name change,
and in recent weeks, users attempting to access the app were redirected to the Shop tab within Android TV.
Permanent Closure in January 2024
As per recent reports, Google has opted to permanently shut down the Play Movies and TV service from the beginning of January 2024.
While the app may still be visible on smartphones, it will no longer be functional on Android TV devices.
Changes in Access
Google has communicated that due to these impending changes, access to Play Movies and TV will cease to be available on Android TV devices.
Additionally, the app will be removed from the Google Play website.
Going forward, the app will remain active only for users with an existing subscription.
Users are advised to take note of these changes, as Google streamlines its offerings in the digital entertainment landscape.
