EPFO Inactive Account Settlement is bringing relief to provident fund subscribers who have small amounts lying untouched in old accounts.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced automatic settlement for eligible inoperative PF accounts holding balances of up to ₹1,000, allowing members to receive their money without filing individual claims.
Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched this initiative on November 1, 2026, during EPFO’s 74th Foundation Day celebrations in New Delhi.
The initiative is expected to benefit approximately one lakh accounts involving nearly ₹5 crore.
Alongside this facility, EPFO has also introduced WhatsApp-based services through which subscribers can check their PF balance, access passbook information and view their latest five transactions.
EPFO Inactive Account Settlement: Who Will Get the Money?
Under the new facility, EPFO will automatically initiate the settlement of eligible inoperative provident fund accounts with balances of up to ₹1,000.
Subscribers whose accounts meet the eligibility requirements will not need to submit individual withdrawal claims to receive their eligible dues.
Instead, EPFO will begin the settlement process after completing the prescribed identity and bank account verification.
An important condition is that the account must be Aadhaar-verified. The bank account linked to the member must also meet the required verification conditions so that the money reaches the rightful beneficiary.
According to the announced initiative, around one lakh inactive accounts involving approximately ₹5 crore are expected to benefit.
This facility is particularly useful for people who may have left small PF balances in old accounts and have not completed the process of claiming that money.
However, the ₹1,000 limit applies specifically to this automatic settlement initiative. It does not mean that PF subscribers can withdraw only ₹1,000 from their regular provident fund accounts.
EPFO Also Launches WhatsApp PF Services
Apart from automatic settlement, EPFO has introduced a new WhatsApp-based service to make routine provident fund information easier to access.
Through EPFO’s verified WhatsApp service, subscribers will be able to check their PF account balance without visiting an EPFO office.
The facility will provide access to three important account-related services: PF balance enquiries, passbook information and details of the latest five transactions.
Members will also receive personalised guidance and assistance with requirements related to the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PMVBRY).
The new service is expected to make basic PF-related information more accessible, particularly for employees who prefer using mobile applications for everyday services.
However, subscribers should understand that checking account information through WhatsApp is different from withdrawing or transferring their PF money.
The announced facility does not establish that withdrawal claims, PF transfers or all other EPFO services can be completed through WhatsApp.
How to Access EPFO Services Through WhatsApp
EPFO has confirmed that the new facility will operate through its verified WhatsApp service. However, the initial launch announcement did not provide the official WhatsApp contact number or complete activation instructions.
Members should therefore check the official EPFO website and verified communication channels for the authorised contact details before using the facility.
Subscribers should also be careful about fraudulent messages and unofficial WhatsApp numbers claiming to provide PF services.
Never share your UAN password, OTP, banking password or other confidential financial information with unknown contacts.
Using only officially verified communication channels is important when accessing personal provident fund information.
What Is an Inoperative EPF Account?
An inoperative EPF account is not simply an account in which an employee has stopped receiving monthly contributions.
Under EPF provisions, an account is generally classified as inoperative when no contribution is received for a continuous period of three years after the member attains 55 years of age or from the date of retirement, whichever is later.
This distinction is important because employees frequently change jobs during their careers.
When an employee moves to another company, the previous PF account may stop receiving contributions, but that alone does not automatically make it an officially inoperative account.
Members should check their account status before assuming that they qualify for automatic settlement.
Employees with larger balances or accounts that do not meet the eligibility conditions will need to follow the applicable EPFO withdrawal or transfer procedures.
Why the New EPFO Facilities Matter
The two initiatives address different problems faced by provident fund subscribers.
The WhatsApp facility makes it easier to monitor PF savings, check recent transactions and access passbook information.
This can help employees keep track of their contributions without repeatedly visiting EPFO offices.
Meanwhile, automatic settlement aims to help eligible members recover small amounts that have remained untouched in old provident fund accounts.
Together, these measures are part of EPFO’s broader effort to improve digital service delivery and simplify access to retirement savings.
For subscribers, the most important step is to verify their account details, Aadhaar information and bank account records.
Those with eligible inactive balances may benefit from the automatic settlement facility, while other members can continue using the existing authorised EPFO services.
