Amul Ghee and Butter Price Hike has increased household expenses just ahead of Diwali 2026, with popular dairy products becoming more expensive.
The price of a 1 kg Amul ghee carton has increased by Rs 50, while the 500-gram butter pack now costs Rs 15 more than before.
However, the exact reasons behind supply disruptions across different regions have not been fully established.
Amul Cow Ghee Shortage Reported in Several Markets
Apart from higher prices, customers are also facing difficulties finding certain Amul dairy products.
Retailers in Vadodara and Ahmedabad have reported limited availability of ghee, particularly cow ghee. Some Amul parlour operators have also said that the quantities supplied to them are lower than their requirements.
In Vadodara, a parlour operator reportedly said that the outlet had not received cow ghee since the Ganesh festival. Retailers also raised their concerns with distributors in an effort to improve supplies.
Although distribution arrangements reportedly improved following discussions, the availability of cow ghee remained limited.
Similar supply-related complaints have also been reported from Pune, Kolkata and Jammu and Kashmir.
Some varieties listed on Amul’s online platform, including pure ghee and buffalo ghee, were also shown as out of stock.
However, product availability can vary depending on the location and time of purchase.
Earlier GST Reduction Had Made Amul Products Cheaper
The latest price revision comes after consumers received relief from the GST reduction announced in September 2025.
At that time, GST on several dairy products was reduced from 12% to 5%.
Following the tax revision, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets Amul products, reduced the prices of more than 700 product packs.
The price of a one-litre ghee carton was reduced from Rs 650 to Rs 610, providing a saving of Rs 40.
Similarly, the price of a five-litre ghee tin came down from Rs 3,275 to Rs 3,075.
Butter prices were also reduced. The 100-gram pack became cheaper from Rs 62 to Rs 58, while the 500-gram pack fell from Rs 305 to Rs 285.
However, the latest increases have partly offset the earlier price relief enjoyed by consumers.
What Does the Price Hike Mean for Diwali Shoppers?
Ghee and butter are widely used during Diwali for preparing sweets, traditional dishes and other festive snacks.
Consequently, even relatively small price increases can affect household food budgets, particularly for families purchasing larger packs.
Customers should compare the available pack sizes and check prices at local retailers before buying. They should also verify product labels and purchase sealed products from reliable sellers.
The Amul Ghee and Butter Price Hike comes at a particularly important time for consumers, as festive demand and reported supply shortages are creating additional pressure in some markets.
For now, customers will be watching whether product availability improves during the remaining festive shopping period.
