Bank Strike September 11 is set to affect banking operations across India as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has announced a nationwide strike over long-pending demands, including a five-day working week and changes to the Performance Linked Incentive scheme.

The unions have also announced a three-day strike later in September and warned of an indefinite strike from October 26 if their demands remain unresolved.

Bank Strike September 11 is the first major shutdown

The first nationwide strike is scheduled for Friday, September 11, 2026.

The UFBU said talks with the Indian Banks’ Association on September 4 did not resolve the key issues, and the union body was therefore not in a position to defer the planned strike.

Another three-day strike has been announced for September 28 to September 30.

If the dispute continues, bank unions have threatened to begin an indefinite strike from October 26.

Why are bank employees going on strike?

One of the main demands is the implementation of a five-day banking week.

According to the unions, the proposal was agreed upon as part of the 12th Bipartite Settlement and 9th Joint Note signed in March 2024, but its implementation is still pending.

The unions have also raised objections to the revised Performance Linked Incentive, or PLI, structure.

They argue that the revised system creates a significant difference in potential incentives between senior officers and other employees.

Other issues raised by the unions include pension-related matters, a common dearness allowance formula for pensioners, staff shortages, increasing workloads and opposition to the privatisation of public sector banks.

Will banking services be affected?

The strikes are expected to affect branch operations at participating banks.

Customers who need services such as branch visits and other physical banking work may face disruption on the strike dates.

However, digital banking services such as internet banking, mobile banking and ATMs may continue to be available.

The extent of disruption can depend on employee participation and individual bank arrangements.

Bank strike dates customers should remember

The immediate date customers should keep in mind is September 11.

The next planned strike is scheduled for September 28 to September 30, followed by the threatened indefinite strike from October 26 if the issues are not resolved.

Customers planning important branch-based transactions may therefore want to check with their bank in advance and use available digital services where possible.
