India Post has changed the eligibility rules for Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI), making it easier for eligible policyholders to continue their insurance coverage even after moving from a rural area to a city.
Under the new rule, an operative savings account with the Post Office Savings Bank (POSB) or any scheduled bank can now be used as an additional eligibility criterion for RPLI.
The revised provision came into effect on August 14, 2026.
The move is particularly important for people who shift from villages to urban areas and want to continue their RPLI policy and pay premiums through their existing bank account.
What Has Changed Under the New RPLI Rule?
Earlier, establishing eligibility for RPLI could be more restrictive for people who changed their place of residence.
Now, an active savings account with either POSB or a scheduled bank has been added as an additional way to establish eligibility.
This is expected to make it easier for eligible people to maintain their RPLI coverage after moving to cities.
However, having a savings account with a scheduled bank does not automatically make a person eligible for an RPLI policy.
Applicants still need to meet the other applicable RPLI conditions.
Easier Documentation for RPLI Applicants
The process of proving savings account eligibility has also been made simpler.
Applicants can use documents or records such as:
CBS status
Email statements
Mobile banking screenshots
ATM statements
Updated passbooks
Where acceptable digital proof is available, applicants do not need to obtain a separate physical bank certificate.
This could make the process more convenient for people who already use mobile or internet banking.
Why Is This Important for People Moving to Cities?
The revised rule is especially useful for RPLI policyholders who move from rural areas to urban locations.
After relocating, they can use a savings account with a scheduled bank to help establish eligibility and continue paying their insurance premiums.
This is aimed at ensuring that a change in residence does not unnecessarily disrupt their insurance coverage.
The government has described the move as an effort to make affordable, government-backed life insurance more accessible to families.
What Is Rural Postal Life Insurance?
Rural Postal Life Insurance, commonly known as RPLI, is a life insurance scheme offered by India Post mainly for people living in rural areas.
The scheme was introduced on March 24, 1995, after the government accepted the recommendations of the Malhotra Committee.
Its main objective is to provide life insurance coverage to the rural population, particularly weaker sections and women workers, while increasing awareness about life insurance.
Who Can Take RPLI?
As per the information released with the latest eligibility change, individuals between 18 and 43 years of age can opt for RPLI, subject to the applicable conditions.
The maximum investment mentioned for rural PLI is Rs 10 lakh.
These conditions are separate from the latest change involving bank savings accounts.
The new rule simply adds an operative POSB or scheduled bank savings account as an additional eligibility criterion.
Does Having a Bank Account Guarantee RPLI Eligibility?
Simply having a savings account with a scheduled bank does not guarantee an RPLI policy.
The new rule only provides an additional route for establishing eligibility. Applicants must continue to satisfy all other applicable requirements under the RPLI scheme.
The biggest benefit of the change is for people who move from rural areas to cities. They can now use their scheduled bank account to help maintain their RPLI coverage and continue making premium payments after relocating.
Overall, the revised rule is aimed at making RPLI more flexible and easier to manage for eligible policyholders as their living circumstances change.
