WhatsApp has become one of the most widely used messaging platforms in the world, and WhatsApp Business is now an important tool for companies.
Now, Meta is making a major change in how businesses are charged for using AI on WhatsApp Business.
Instead of paying per message, businesses will soon be billed using a token-based pricing system.
The new system will come into effect from August 1, 2026, for all business accounts using Meta’s AI agents on the WhatsApp Business platform.
Why Is Meta Changing the Billing System?
Earlier, businesses were charged based on the number of messages exchanged with AI agents.
This often made pricing less flexible and harder to predict.
With the new system, Meta says billing will be more transparent and fair.
Instead of charging per message, businesses will now pay based on tokens used during AI conversations.
Simple or short queries will use fewer tokens, meaning lower cost. Longer and more complex conversations will use more tokens and cost slightly more.
How the Token-Based Pricing Works
Under the new model, charges will be based on the number of tokens used between a user’s question and the AI’s response.
Meta has set a global rate of $2 per 1 million tokens, which is approximately ₹190.
According to the company, a normal AI conversation usually uses around 20,000 to 25,000 tokens.
This means:
Each conversation may cost around ₹0.04 to ₹0.05
In broader terms, around ₹4 to ₹5 for multiple interactions
This makes the system relatively low-cost for most small and medium businesses.
What It Means for Businesses
The new billing model will mainly impact businesses that use WhatsApp Business AI agents frequently.
For many users, this change could make pricing more predictable and transparent compared to the earlier per-message system. Short conversations may become even more cost-efficient.
At the same time, businesses that rely heavily on AI automation will need to monitor token usage to manage overall expenses effectively.
A Shift Toward Smarter AI Pricing
With this update, Meta is moving toward a more usage-based pricing structure for its AI services.
While casual business users are unlikely to see major cost changes, companies using AI at scale will need to adapt to the new token-based system starting August 2026
