The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was launched to provide free LPG connections to women from poor families.

Before the scheme, many women in rural areas cooked on traditional wood-fired stoves, exposing them to harmful smoke and serious health problems.

The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 1, 2016, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.

Today, it has helped millions of women switch to clean cooking fuel, making kitchens safer and healthier.
