Indian Railways has updated the cancellation rules for confirmed tickets. Under the new system, the refund amount and penalty depend completely on how early you cancel your ticket.

The main goal of these changes is to make the process simpler and stop misuse of the system.

Refund Depends on Cancellation Time

The refund amount will now be decided based on how many hours before departure you cancel your ticket:

More than 72 hours before departure
You will get up to 75% refund. Only a fixed cancellation charge will be deducted.

Between 72 hours and 24 hours
Around 25% of the fare will be deducted.

Between 24 hours and 8 hours
Up to 50% of the fare will be deducted.

Less than 8 hours before departure
No refund will be given.

At or after train departure time
No refund will be provided.

New Facility to Change Boarding Point

Passengers can now change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before the train’s departure time.

This is very helpful, especially for people living in big cities with multiple railway stations.

What Was the Earlier Rule?

Earlier, passengers could change their boarding station only until the chart was prepared.

Now, with the new rule, this change can be made almost until the last moment, making travel more convenient.

Action Against Ticket Brokers

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that these new rules will help control ticket brokers (touts).

Earlier, many brokers used to book tickets in bulk and later cancel them to earn money from refunds. The new system is designed to stop such practices.

Benefits for Passengers

These new rules will:

Make ticket booking more transparent

Provide more flexibility to passengers

Reduce misuse by brokers

However, passengers should note that late cancellations may now lead to higher losses.
