Indian Railways has introduced a new ticket booking rule that comes into effect today, Monday, January 12.

This change is aimed at making ticket booking easier and fairer for genuine passengers.

Under the new rule, Aadhaar-verified IRCTC users will get more time to book train tickets on the first day of the Advance Reservation Period (ARP).

With this update, verified users can now book tickets right up to midnight on the day the booking window opens.

What Has Changed for IRCTC Users

Earlier, Aadhaar-verified users had limited time slots to book tickets on the opening day of reservations.

Now, this restriction has been relaxed.

From January 12 onwards, Aadhaar-verified IRCTC users will be able to book general reservation tickets throughout the day, until 12 midnight, on the first day of the ARP.

This gives passengers more flexibility and reduces the rush during peak morning hours.

Rules for PRS Counter Bookings

IRCTC has clarified that from January 12, 2026, only Aadhaar-verified users can book general reservation tickets on the first day of advance booking through online platforms.

However, there is no change in the ticket booking process at computerized PRS counters.

Passengers who prefer offline booking can continue using PRS counters as before.

According to the Railway Ministry, Aadhaar verification has been introduced to strengthen the booking system and prevent misuse.

Advanced technology is also being used to detect and stop fraudulent activities.

How the Rules Worked Earlier

Until now, Aadhaar-verified users were allowed to book reserved tickets only during fixed time slots on the first day of booking.

Initially, this window was very short and limited to the first few minutes after bookings opened.

Over time, the Railways gradually expanded the booking window for verified users to improve access and convenience.

How the Booking Time Was Extended Over Time

At first, Aadhaar verification was mandatory only for the first 15 minutes of ticket booking through the IRCTC website or app.

Later, this window was extended from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

On December 29, 2025, Aadhaar-verified users were allowed to book tickets from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Then, on January 5, the booking window was further extended from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Now, with the latest update, verified users can book tickets for the entire day, making the process more convenient and passenger-friendly.
