Meta has announced that its Messenger desktop app for Windows and Mac will be shutting down starting December 15th.
After this date, users will not be able to log in to the app. If anyone tries to log in, they will be redirected to Facebook’s website, where they can continue their conversations.
Shutdown Process and Notifications
According to Messenger’s help page, the shutdown process will begin soon. Users will receive in-app alerts notifying them about the closure.
After December 15th, the app will no longer function, and Meta advises users to delete the app, as it will be useless after that date.
How Users Can Continue Messaging
Meta is informing users ahead of time so they can switch to other methods.
Windows users can continue messaging through the Facebook desktop app or the Facebook website.
Mac users can access Messenger through the Facebook website.
Preserve Your Chat History
Before the app closes, Meta recommends users:
Turn on secure storage
Set up a PIN to save chat history
This ensures that chats sync automatically across all supported devices when using Messenger via Facebook’s web version.
Meta also clarified that users who only have Messenger accounts can log in through the Messenger online client without needing a Facebook account.
