Ideal Conditions and Planting Method

Black pepper grows best in humid and shady areas. It does not thrive in extreme cold or heat.

Since it is a climbing vine, it needs support, making it ideal to plant near coconut or betel nut trees.

Steps to plant black pepper:

Dig a pit about 30 cm away from a support tree.

Fill the pit with a mix of organic manure and clean soil.

Add BHC powder to protect the plant from pests.

Place the plant in the pit and support it with the tree or a wooden stick.

In India, Kerala leads black pepper production with a 98% share. Other key states include Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and parts of Maharashtra’s Konkan region.

High Demand and Good Profit

Black pepper sells for ₹350 to ₹400 per kg in the market. After harvesting, the pepper pods are soaked in water

and dried to enhance their color and quality. Selling directly to markets or retailers can increase profits for farmers.

Even with a small piece of land and a limited budget, black pepper farming can be highly rewarding.

Using organic methods not only makes it sustainable but also allows farmers to sell at higher prices.
