Apple’s RCS messaging could pose a challenge to Google and WhatsApp, as it allows messages to be sent from Apple’s iMessage to Google’s Android inbox.
How RCS Works
Apple’s RCS is an interactive messaging protocol that facilitates two-way communication. Users will be able to share pictures
and videos, have group conversations, and more. This service offers several features beyond traditional messaging.
In 2008, Apple introduced the Global System for Mobile Association Protocol (GSMA). This protocol allows SMS communication between telecom and mobile devices.
It also supports file transfer, audio messaging, video sharing, group chats, enriched calling, live sketching, and location sharing through a universal protocol.
Availability for Android Users
Initially available only for iPhone users, Apple’s RCS messaging is now being rolled out for Android users as well.
iPhone users could communicate using IP messages, indicated by a blue bubble, while Android users will see a green bubble. This expansion allows both iPhone and Android users to benefit from the new messaging service.
