New Zealand has announced changes to its post-study work visa rules, including a new six-month Short-Term Graduate Work Visa.
The new visa will open for applications from November 16, 2026, giving eligible international graduates time to find work and explore longer-term visa options.
New Zealand Short-Term Graduate Work Visa
The new visa will provide up to six months of open work rights. Eligible graduates can work for any employer in New Zealand while looking for employment and, where suitable, move to longer-term options such as the Accredited Employer Work Visa.
To qualify, applicants must have completed an eligible NZQCF Level 5 to 7 qualification through full-time study for at least 24 weeks in New Zealand.
English language, foundation and bridging qualifications are not eligible. Applicants must also have at least NZ$5,000 in available funds and meet health and character requirements.
Applications must generally be submitted within three months of the applicant’s New Zealand student visa expiring. The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa cannot be extended, and a person can receive it only once.
New Post Study Work Visa Eligibility
From November 16, 2026, New Zealand will also extend Post-Study Work Visa eligibility to graduates who complete an NZQCF Level 7 graduate diploma.
They must have studied the qualification full-time in New Zealand for its full duration and hold a bachelor’s degree completed either in New Zealand or overseas.
The Post-Study Work Visa can allow eligible graduates to stay and work in New Zealand for up to three years, depending on their qualification.
For the newly eligible Level 7 graduate diploma pathway, the visa can be issued for the duration of the graduate diploma study in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year.
What Students Should Know
The new short-term visa is designed as a temporary work pathway and does not guarantee permanent residence.
Students should check the qualification requirements, job opportunities and other immigration options before choosing a study or work pathway.
People using the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa must work under an employment agreement or contract for services. They cannot start or operate their own business under this visa.
