Free railway travel for gallantry award winners will begin from November 1, 2026, under a new lifetime travel facility announced for eligible recipients of gallantry medals from the Armed Forces.
The benefit will also cover eligible family members in specified cases.
The facility is intended to provide complimentary rail travel to decorated personnel while also extending support to families of those who received gallantry awards posthumously.
Free Railway Travel From November 1
The new railway travel benefit will become effective from November 1, 2026. Eligible gallantry medal winners will be able to travel without paying the applicable railway fare under the new lifetime facility.
The benefit applies to eligible gallantry award recipients from the Army, Navy and Air Force. The facility is not a general free-travel scheme for all serving or retired defence personnel.
Who Can Get Free Railway Travel
The concession is meant for recipients of specified gallantry awards. The reported framework also provides provisions for eligible family members of personnel who received the award posthumously.
In such cases, the eligibility of parents or spouses depends on the conditions applicable to the award recipient and the family relationship.
Beneficiaries will need to meet the prescribed eligibility requirements before using the facility.
The railway concession is therefore linked to the gallantry award status rather than simply to a person’s service in the Armed Forces.
Which Train Classes Are Covered
Eligible gallantry award recipients can use the complimentary travel facility in the classes permitted under the new railway concession. The reported benefits include First Class, Second AC and AC Chair Car travel.
One companion can also travel with an eligible award recipient under the facility. This provision is particularly relevant for beneficiaries who may require assistance while travelling.
The benefit is available across the Indian Railways network, subject to the applicable railway rules and booking requirements.
How to Book a Free Railway Ticket
Eligible beneficiaries will need to follow the prescribed railway booking process and provide the required identification or concession details while making a reservation.
The facility does not mean that an eligible passenger can simply board any train without completing the required ticketing formalities.
The applicable documents and eligibility verification will remain important when booking and travelling.
Beneficiaries should therefore keep their valid defence identification and award-related documents ready.
Further booking instructions and operational details may be issued by the Railways before the facility comes into effect on November 1.
The new lifetime travel provision expands the existing railway concession framework for gallantry award recipients and provides a dedicated travel benefit for decorated members of the Armed Forces and eligible families.
