Indian tourists planning a trip to Thailand should be aware of an important change. Thailand is reducing the visa-free stay period for eligible travelers from 60 days to 30 days.
The new rule will take effect on September 15, 2026. Indians will still be able to visit Thailand without a visa for tourism, but the normal visa-free stay will be limited to 30 days per visit.
What Changes for Indian Tourists?
Until now, eligible Indian passport holders could stay in Thailand without a visa for up to 60 days. From September 15, this period will be reduced to 30 days.
For most people taking a short holiday to Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Krabi or Koh Samui, the change may not cause much inconvenience. However, anyone planning to stay for more than a month will need to plan more carefully.
Travelers may be able to request an extension of up to another 30 days from Thai immigration. However, approval is not guaranteed and will depend on the immigration authorities.
Which Countries Are Covered?
The revised visa-free system applies to citizens of 60 countries and territories.
Apart from India, the list includes countries such as the US, UK, Australia, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia, as well as EU member states.
The change is expected to have the biggest impact on people who take longer holidays or frequently use visa-free entry to stay in Thailand.
Special Rules for Land Border Entry
Thailand also has restrictions on repeated visa-free entries through land borders. In general, eligible foreign travelers entering Thailand by land can use visa-free entry only twice in a calendar year.
However, citizens of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore are exempt from this two-entry restriction. Their visa-free stay will still be limited to 30 days per visit.
This rule is particularly important for travelers entering Thailand through road and land-border checkpoints.
Why Is Thailand Changing the Rule?
Thailand had increased the visa-free stay period to 60 days in July 2024, allowing tourists from several countries, including India, to enjoy longer trips without applying for a visa.
The government has now decided to return to a 30-day visa-free period. The changes are aimed at improving immigration management, preventing misuse of visa-free facilities and making entry rules clearer.
The revised visa policy was approved by the Thai Cabinet in July 2026.
Planning to Stay for More Than 30 Days?
Indian travelers who want to remain in Thailand for more than 30 days should check the appropriate visa options before starting their journey.
An extension may be available through Thai immigration, but travelers should not assume that an additional 30 days will automatically be granted.
Travelers may also be required to show that they have sufficient funds for their stay. The stated requirement is 20,000 Thai baht per person or 40,000 baht per family.
What About Tourists Already in Thailand?
Travelers who legally entered Thailand before the new rules take effect will generally be allowed to stay until the end of the period already granted to them.
This means the new 30-day limit is not expected to automatically shorten an existing approved stay.
What Indians Should Check Before Traveling
Before flying to Thailand, Indian tourists should check their passport validity and the latest entry requirements. They should also make sure their planned visa-free trip does not exceed 30 days.
Those planning a longer stay should check visa or extension options in advance. Travelers entering Thailand through a land border should also verify whether limits on repeated entries apply to them.
It is also advisable to carry proof of sufficient funds and check the latest rules with Thai immigration or the relevant Thai diplomatic mission before departure.

The key date for Indian travelers is September 15, 2026. Some earlier reports mentioned September 1, but the updated information cited in the reports gives September 15 as the effective date of the new 30-day Tourist Visa Exemption Scheme.
The most important point is that Thailand is not ending visa-free entry for Indians. Indian tourists will still be able to travel visa-free, but the standard permitted stay is being reduced from 60 days to 30 days.
