Buying a new car in Haryana could now be cheaper if it is registered in a woman’s name.
The Haryana government has announced a new road tax rebate for women to encourage vehicle ownership and strengthen women’s financial empowerment.
The decision was approved during the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
Under the new rule, women will receive a 1% reduction in Motor Vehicle Tax (Road Tax) on non-transport vehicles priced up to ₹20 lakh.
Up to ₹20,000 Savings on Car Registration
The new tax rates for vehicles registered in a woman’s name are:
Cars with an ex-showroom price up to ₹6 lakh: Road tax reduced from 5% to 4%.
Cars and SUVs priced between ₹6 lakh and ₹20 lakh: Road tax reduced from 8% to 7%.
Vehicles priced above ₹20 lakh: No change. The existing 10% tax rate will continue.
This means buyers can save up to ₹20,000 depending on the vehicle’s price.
Savings on Small Cars
Women buying budget-friendly cars can enjoy noticeable savings at the time of registration.
Maruti Alto K10 (around ₹4.23 lakh): Save about ₹4,230.
Renault Kwid RXE (around ₹4.70 lakh): Save about ₹4,700.
Tata Tiago XE (around ₹5 lakh): Save about ₹5,000.
Cars like Tata Punch, Maruti Swift, Baleno, and Tata Tigor (around ₹6 lakh): Save up to ₹6,000.
Bigger SUVs Mean Bigger Savings
The tax rebate becomes even more valuable for vehicles priced between ₹6 lakh and ₹20 lakh.
Tata Nexon (around ₹9 lakh): Save about ₹9,000.
Maruti Grand Vitara (around ₹11 lakh): Save about ₹11,000.
Hyundai Creta (around ₹13 lakh): Save about ₹13,000.
Toyota Innova Crysta (around ₹19 lakh): Save around ₹19,000.
The higher the vehicle price within the eligible limit, the bigger the tax savings.
Huge Tax Relief for Electric Vehicles
The Haryana Cabinet has also announced major benefits for electric vehicle buyers.
New electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers priced up to ₹30 lakh will get a 100% exemption from Motor Vehicle Tax.
Electric vehicles costing more than ₹30 lakh will receive a 50% tax exemption.
The existing 20% road tax discount on CNG vehicles will continue without any changes.
Why Haryana Introduced This Scheme
According to reports, Transport Minister Anil Vij had been pushing for this proposal for some time.
Many Haryana residents were reportedly purchasing vehicles from local dealerships but registering them in Delhi or Chandigarh to reduce costs, leading to revenue losses for the state.
The government believes these new tax benefits will encourage more people to register vehicles within Haryana while also promoting vehicle ownership in the names of women.
