Air India has announced that it is preparing to restore its full West Asia flight network from this year’s winter schedule.
Although recent tensions in the Middle East disrupted flight operations, passenger demand has remained strong.
The airline says bookings have already started for most of the affected routes as the situation gradually returns to normal.
Why Were Air India Flights Affected?
According to Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial and Transformation Officer of Air India and Chairman of Air India Express, recent geopolitical tensions led to the temporary closure of airspace in several Middle Eastern countries.
These restrictions affected flight operations, but there was no major drop in passenger demand.
The airline says it is ready to resume full services as soon as the airspace and airports are considered completely safe.
Air India is also carrying out daily safety reviews in coordination with local authorities and airport officials.
Flight schedules will continue based on these safety assessments.
Rising Fuel Prices Remain a Challenge
Air India said aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices continue to be affected by global geopolitical developments, making them difficult for airlines to control.
While the airline can adjust its flight network and operations to reduce the impact, rising fuel costs remain a challenge.
However, the company believes the toughest phase is now behind it.
Air India to Add 60–70 Aircraft Every Year
Air India is moving ahead with one of its biggest expansion plans.
The airline has placed orders for around 600 new aircraft, although fewer than 10% have been delivered so far.
Deliveries are expected to speed up from the end of this year.
Over the next seven to eight years, Air India plans to add around 60 to 70 new aircraft annually.
In the next 12 to 18 months alone, the airline expects to receive 10 to 15 wide-body aircraft and 40 to 50 narrow-body aircraft.
These deliveries include the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and Boeing 737 MAX 8.
Air India also hopes to be among the first airlines to receive the Boeing 737 MAX 10 after it receives certification.
Fleet Upgrade Underway
Air India is also modernizing its existing fleet to improve the passenger experience.
New cabins have already been installed on narrow-body aircraft. Air India Express aims to complete upgrades across its fleet by March next year.
The airline will then begin upgrading its Dreamliners, followed by the Boeing 777 fleet.
The company says most of the issues associated with its older aircraft are now being resolved through these upgrades.
UAE Remains Air India’s Biggest International Market
International routes contribute nearly two-thirds of the Air India Group’s total revenue and flight capacity.
Within its international network, almost half of the traffic is connected to West Asia.
The UAE alone accounts for nearly two-thirds of that regional traffic, making it one of Air India’s most important overseas markets.
More Indian Cities to Get Direct UAE Flights
Air India Express is rapidly expanding its direct connectivity between India and the UAE.
The airline has recently launched direct UAE flights from Lucknow, Indore, and Navi Mumbai.
It will also start its first direct flight from Guwahati to the UAE in the first week of August.
The airline says more Indian cities will be connected directly to the UAE in the coming months, giving passengers more travel options and better connectivity.
