Fresh Instructions Released for Family Pension Processing

The Railway Board has issued a fresh directive to all zonal railways and production units regarding the processing of family pension claims.

The move comes after concerns were raised that different railway divisions were following their own procedures while handling family pension cases.

To avoid confusion and ensure fairness, the Board has now instructed all units to strictly follow the Railway (Services) Pension Rules, 2026.

The order was issued on June 19, 2026, under RBE No. 47/2026.

Why Did the Railway Board Issue This Order?

According to the Railway Board, the National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR) informed authorities that some railway zones and divisions were using separate guidelines while processing family pension claims.

This resulted in different practices being followed across the railway network.

To address the issue, the Board has clarified that all family pension cases must be handled only according to the provisions laid down in the Railway (Services) Pension Rules, 2026.

The objective is to ensure that beneficiaries receive equal treatment regardless of where their claim is processed.

Why Is Family Pension So Important?

Family pension serves as a vital financial support system for the families of deceased railway employees and pensioners.

After the death of an employee or pensioner, eligible family members may receive pension benefits to help meet their daily expenses and maintain financial stability.

In most cases, the pension is first provided to the surviving spouse. If no spouse is eligible, the benefit may be transferred to eligible children according to the rules.

In certain situations, dependent parents or disabled family members may also qualify for benefits.
