Traveling on National Highways may soon become much more convenient.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has directed that vehicle repair shops and puncture repair facilities be set up quickly at Wayside Amenities (WSAs) across the country.
The move is aimed at helping motorists and commercial vehicle operators get immediate assistance during breakdowns and emergencies while traveling on highways and expressways.
Why Is NHAI Taking This Step?
According to officials, many National Highways and Expressways currently lack adequate vehicle repair and puncture repair services.
As traffic on highways continues to increase, breakdowns and mechanical issues can cause significant delays and inconvenience for travelers.
In some cases, stranded vehicles can also create safety risks for other road users.
To address this issue, National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), a wholly owned subsidiary of NHAI, has instructed its field offices to encourage operators of Wayside Amenities to prioritize setting up these facilities.
Faster Help During Breakdowns
The availability of repair shops and puncture repair centers will allow drivers to get quick mechanical assistance without having to travel long distances in search of help.
This is expected to benefit:
Private vehicle owners
Commercial truck operators
Bus operators
Long-distance travelers
Quick access to repair services can reduce vehicle downtime, save time, and make highway journeys safer and more comfortable.
What Are Wayside Amenities?
Wayside Amenities are modern service hubs being developed by NHLML along National Highways and Expressways.
These facilities are being built under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and are designed to provide essential services to travelers.
Apart from basic amenities, lease agreements already allow operators to set up additional facilities such as:
Vehicle repair shops
Puncture repair centers
Food and refreshment outlets
Rest areas
Other traveler support services
The goal is to create one-stop service centers that meet the needs of both passengers and commercial vehicle operators.
Better Travel Experience on Highways
Officials believe that expanding repair and maintenance facilities will significantly improve roadside assistance services across the highway network.
Drivers facing sudden mechanical issues will be able to access help more quickly, reducing stress and avoiding long delays during their journeys.
This is especially important for freight operators, whose deliveries often depend on timely transportation.
Part of NHAI’s Bigger Highway Vision
The latest initiative is part of NHAI’s broader plan to make India’s highways safer, more user-friendly, and better equipped to support growing traffic and logistics operations.
By improving access to essential services such as vehicle repairs and puncture assistance, authorities aim to create a smoother and more reliable travel experience for both passenger vehicles and commercial transport.
As India’s highway network continues to expand, these additional facilities could become a major convenience for millions of travelers who use National Highways every day.
