Getting a confirmed train ticket is not always easy, especially during festivals, long weekends, and holiday seasons. Many passengers travel with waitlisted tickets and keep searching for the TTE in the hope of getting a vacant seat.
However, many people do not know that Indian Railways provides an online facility that lets passengers check vacant seats even after the train has started its journey.
Most Passengers Don’t Know About This Feature
Indian Railways offers a facility called Current Reservation Availability (CRA), which helps passengers check whether any seats or berths are available on a running train.
This feature can be extremely useful for passengers traveling with waitlisted tickets. Instead of moving from coach to coach or looking for the TTE, you can first check seat availability online.
How to Check Vacant Seats on a Running Train
Step 1: Visit the Seat Availability Portal
Open the IRCTC website or any authorized railway seat availability platform. Look for the Current Reservation Availability (CRA) option.
Step 2: Enter Train Details
Type the train number or train name and select your journey date. This feature is particularly useful if you are already traveling with a waitlisted ticket.
Step 3: Select Boarding and Destination Stations
Enter your boarding station and destination station. After that, click on the “Current Availability” or “Current Reservation” option.
Indian Railways updates the reservation chart before departure and, in many cases, during the journey as well. The chart shows details of seats that are vacant or available for allocation.
What Happens After You Find a Vacant Seat?
Once the details appear on the screen, you can see which class has available seats and how many berths are vacant.
If seats are available, you can approach the TTE and request a seat allotment. However, seeing a vacant seat online does not guarantee that the seat will be allotted to you.
The final decision is made by the TTE according to railway rules and seat availability at that time.
Indian Railways Is Making Travel Easier
Indian Railways is continuously expanding its digital services. Today, passengers can access ticket booking, train tracking, platform details, and seat availability online.
Using the Current Reservation Availability feature can save time and help passengers quickly check whether a seat is available without unnecessary hassle during their journey.
