If your driving license has expired, ignoring it can create serious problems later.
According to government rules, drivers get a 30-day grace period after the expiry date to renew the license without paying any extra charge. But after that, penalties may apply.
If the delay becomes too long, you may even have to apply for a new license and take the driving test again. The good part is that the entire driving license renewal process can now be completed online from home.
How Long Is a Driving License Valid?
In India, a driving license is usually valid for 20 years or until the holder turns 40 years old, whichever comes first.
After the age of 40, the license needs to be renewed every 10 years. Once a person crosses 50 years of age, the validity reduces to only 5 years.
The government also offers a 30-day grace period after the expiry date. During this time, drivers can renew the license without paying any additional late fee.
Delay in Renewal Can Become Expensive
If you fail to renew your driving license on time, the situation can become more difficult.
A delay of more than one year after expiry may lead to cancellation of the license. In such cases, the driver may need to complete the entire process again, just like applying for a fresh driving license.
Some drivers may also be asked to take a driving test again before getting the new license approved.
