WhatsApp is working on new features to make your chats and backups more secure.

Easier and Safer Backups with Passkeys
One of the biggest updates could be passkey-based encryption for backups.
Instead of remembering long and complicated passwords, users may soon be able to use simple options like fingerprint, face unlock, or their phone’s screen lock.
This change would make backups both more secure and easier to access.
It also reduces the risk of forgetting passwords, which is a common problem today.
Moving Beyond Google Drive and iCloud
Right now, Android users store their backups on Google Drive, while iPhone users rely on iCloud.
But as chats, photos, and videos keep increasing, storage fills up quickly.
This often creates issues for users who don’t have enough space.
To solve this, WhatsApp is reportedly working on its own cloud storage system.
This could allow users to store backups directly on “WhatsApp Cloud” instead of depending only on Google Drive or iCloud.
Early reports suggest users might get up to 2GB of free storage.
Paid Plans and More Security Options
In the future, WhatsApp may also introduce paid storage plans.
These could offer around 50GB of space at a low monthly cost.
Users might also get multiple ways to secure their backups, including:
Passkeys
Traditional passwords
A 64-digit encryption key
This gives more flexibility depending on what users prefer.
