Indian Railways has introduced an incredible new benefit for the nation’s brave soldiers.
Gallantry award-winning personnel from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with their families, will now enjoy lifetime free train travel.
This move is a heartfelt salute to their courage and sacrifice, while also showing the Railways’ gratitude for their service.
Who Gets Free Travel and What It Covers
The scheme applies to soldiers who have received top honors such as Param Vir Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra.
The benefit is not limited to the soldiers themselves—wives and widows are also entitled to free travel in premium classes like First Class, Second AC, and AC Chair Car.
The government has made this rule even more convenient by allowing an attendant or companion traveling with the medal winner or widow to also receive free travel.
This is particularly helpful for elderly or injured soldiers who may need assistance during their journey.
According to the Defence Ministry, this facility is a small recognition of their immense sacrifice, ensuring they travel without any financial burden.
Discounts for Other Passengers
Indian Railways continues to support other groups as well.
People with disabilities, mental challenges, or total blindness can get up to 75 percent fare concessions in General, Sleeper, and 3AC classes.
Passengers with serious medical conditions like cancer, thalassemia, heart, kidney, and AIDS also get travel discounts for hospital visits.
Students, too, benefit with 50 to 75 percent fare concessions when traveling between home and educational institutions.
With these new rules and concessions, Indian Railways is not only honoring heroes but also making travel more affordable and inclusive for everyone.
