WhatsApp is making a major upgrade to its web platform.

The messaging app has started rolling out native voice and video calling on WhatsApp Web, ending the long wait for browser users.

Until now, users had to rely on WhatsApp’s desktop app for calling features.

With this update, calls can be made directly from a web browser, making WhatsApp Web far more useful for everyday communication.

At present, the feature is available only to selected users.

Who Can Use Calling on WhatsApp Web Right Now

Voice and video calling on WhatsApp Web is currently limited to users enrolled in the WhatsApp Web beta programme.

The rollout is happening in phases, so availability may differ from one account to another.

WhatsApp is expected to extend access to more users over the coming weeks.

Regular users may not see the calling option yet.

How to Make Voice or Video Calls on WhatsApp Web

Using this feature is simple and does not require any additional downloads.

Open WhatsApp Web in your browser and go to an individual chat.

A call icon will appear at the top of the chat window. Click on it to start a voice or video call instantly.

There is no need to install extra software or browser extensions.

One-on-One Calls Only for Now

Currently, WhatsApp Web supports only one-on-one voice and video calls.

Group calling is not available at the moment. WhatsApp is still testing the feature, and group calls are expected to be added once development is complete.

Privacy and End-to-End Encryption

WhatsApp has confirmed that all voice and video calls made through the web version are end-to-end encrypted.

This means only the people on the call can access the conversation.

The same security standards used on mobile apps apply to web-based calls as well.

Screen Sharing Makes Web Calls More Useful

A key highlight of this update is the screen sharing feature.

Users can share their screen during a video call directly from the browser.

This makes WhatsApp Web more useful for meetings, online support, and collaboration.

Group Calls and More Features Coming Soon

WhatsApp is also working on group calling for the web version.

Future updates are expected to include support for multiple participants, call links, and scheduled calls.

How to Join the WhatsApp Web Beta Programme

Users who want early access to new features can join WhatsApp’s beta programme.

You can sign up through the settings menu, which increases your chances of getting upcoming updates before they are released to everyone.
