India has taken a big step towards smarter and safer international travel with the launch of the e-Passport.
This new version of the passport comes with advanced security features and is designed to make travel smoother for Indian citizens.

What Is an e-Passport?
An e-Passport looks very similar to a regular passport, but it has a key upgrade.
It carries a small electronic chip inside and a gold symbol on the cover to identify it.
The chip securely stores personal information and biometric data such as fingerprints and facial details.
This makes the passport much harder to fake and helps authorities verify a traveller’s identity quickly and accurately.
Who Can Apply for an e-Passport?
Any Indian citizen who is eligible for a regular passport can apply for an e-Passport.
If your Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) has started issuing e-Passports, you will automatically receive one.
The government is rolling out this service in phases across the country.
Over time, both new applicants and people renewing their passports will be able to get an e-Passport.
The application process remains the same:
Register on the Passport Seva portal
Fill in the application form
Pay the required fee
Visit the centre for biometric verification
The fee is ₹1,500 for a 36-page passport and ₹2,000 for a 60-page passport.
Tatkal applications cost more.
Existing passports will stay valid until their expiry date.
