Amazon has started rolling out its new Alexa Plus AI service to a wider audience, but there’s a catch—free access is only for Amazon Prime members.
The company is taking a cautious approach, gradually releasing features to ensure everything works smoothly before a full public launch.
Currently, Alexa Plus can book an Uber, draft emails, and search for products, with more smart features planned in the future.
Amazon aims to make it a fully functional AI assistant.
Why Prime Members Get Extra Perks
Alexa Plus is usually a paid service at $19.99 per month (around ₹1,720).
But Prime members, who already pay $14.99 per month (around ₹1,290), get Alexa Plus for free.
This includes access to Alexa’s new AI avatar and advanced features, making the Prime subscription even more valuable for users in the US.
Currently Available Only in the US
At the moment, Alexa Plus and its AI avatar are limited to the United States.
Users in other countries, including India, will have to wait for the global launch.
Amazon is monitoring how US users interact with Alexa Plus and planning improvements based on this feedback.
Free Access on Web and App
Amazon has also introduced free access via the Alexa website or mobile app, which does not require Prime membership.
However, this version is limited to basic features, working more like a chatbot for simple tasks such as travel planning or asking questions.
What Alexa Plus Can Do
Alexa Plus has agentic capabilities, which means it can:
Order food
Book cabs
Find favorite cafes
Automate smart home devices
Amazon reports that millions of US users have already tried it under the Early Access program.
It’s powered by Nova and Anthropic AI models, making it competitive with tools like ChatGPT and Gemini.
When Will Alexa Plus Come to India?
While the new AI avatar is exciting, Amazon’s US-only rollout leaves many users in India waiting.
There’s no official timeline yet, but a global launch is expected in the near future so Alexa can learn, improve, and compete with other AI assistants.
