Air India has restarted its direct flight service between Shanghai and New Delhi, bringing welcome news for travellers, businesses, and students.
The move is being seen as a major step toward restoring direct connectivity between India and China after a long gap.
The Consulate General of India in Shanghai described the development as an important milestone in improving people-to-people and institutional ties between the two countries.
Direct Flights Resume After Six Years
The first Shanghai–New Delhi flight took off from Shanghai Pudong International Airport with over 230 passengers on board.
The service is operated using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
These direct flights were suspended in early 2020.
Their return after nearly six years marks a key moment in normalising air travel between India and China.
What Officials Are Saying
Consul General of India in Shanghai, Pratik Mathur, said the restart of direct flights shows renewed momentum in India–China engagement.
He highlighted that better air connectivity plays a crucial role in boosting trade, tourism, academic exchanges, and people-to-people contacts, especially between India and eastern regions of China.
Flight Frequency and Travel Benefits
Air India will operate this route four times a week using its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
The aircraft features upgraded cabins and improved onboard services for passengers.
The resumed service reflects rising travel demand and supports the gradual recovery of cross-border movement.
It is also expected to benefit business travel, education links, and cultural exchanges.
Boost for Economic and Cultural Ties
The restored flight connection will strengthen links between India and the Yangtze River Delta region, one of China’s most economically important areas.
The Indian Consulate in Shanghai said it will continue supporting efforts that improve connectivity and deepen cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, tourism, education, and culture.
For travellers and businesses alike, the return of direct flights brings faster, more convenient access between the two countries.
