The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made a major improvement in the FASTag process for car owners.
The government has announced that from 1 February 2026, the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification process will be completely removed for new FASTags issued for cars, jeeps, and vans.
This decision aims to reduce delays, unnecessary follow-ups, and complaints faced by vehicle owners while issuing and using FASTag.
Why KYV Was a Problem Earlier
Earlier, KYV verification was required after the FASTag was issued. Even when drivers had valid documents, many of them had to repeatedly upload documents, send vehicle photos,
and go through verification again and again. This caused delays and inconvenience for FASTag users.
To solve this issue, NHAI has now shifted the entire verification responsibility to banks before the FASTag is activated, making the process faster and smoother.
What Was KYV and Why Was It Introduced?
Know Your Vehicle (KYV) was a verification step used to confirm vehicle details after issuing a FASTag. The main purpose of KYV was to ensure that:
The FASTag was linked to the correct vehicle number
Fake or duplicate FASTags were not being used
What Has Changed Under the New Rules?
KYV Completely Removed for New FASTags
From February 1, 2026, KYV will no longer be mandatory for new FASTags issued to cars. There will be no post-activation verification.
Banks Will Handle Vehicle Verification
Banks will now verify all vehicle details before issuing the FASTag.
Vehicle details will be checked through the VAHAN database
If details are not available on VAHAN, the Registration Certificate (RC) will be used
No KYV Required for Existing FASTag Users
For FASTags that are already issued, KYV will not be a routine process. KYV will be done only if there is a specific complaint, such as:
FASTag issued incorrectly
Tag linked to the wrong vehicle
Tag misuse
Loose or damaged tag

Faster and Smoother FASTag Issuance
Since verification will be completed before activation, users can start using FASTag immediately after purchase.
No Repeated Document Submission
Vehicle owners will no longer need to upload documents again and again or contact support repeatedly.
KYV Only for Serious Issues
Inspection or verification will now happen only in case of serious problems like invalid tags, misuse, or incorrect issuance.
