Maharashtra Allows 24/7 Operations for Shops and Entertainment

The Maharashtra government has approved that shops, malls, restaurants, hotels, and theaters/cinemas in the state can now remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This order, issued by the Department of Labor, Industry, Energy, and Mining, aims to boost business across Maharashtra.

Earlier, local authorities and police had raised concerns about round-the-clock operations.

The government has now clarified that these establishments can operate without any time restrictions.

Exceptions and Employee Rights

However, this rule does not apply to establishments selling alcohol, including bars, pubs, wine shops, dance bars, and permit rooms. These places will continue to follow their existing working hours.

The government has also mandated that employees must get 24 consecutive hours off every week.

This provision comes under the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, 2017, ensuring that workers’ rights are protected.

Benefits for Businesses and Customers

This move is expected to meet the growing demand for late-night shopping and entertainment in major cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur.

Businesses will have more flexibility to serve customers better, while the government believes this will strengthen the state economy and create more employment opportunities.

The state government has instructed all relevant departments to enforce this rule strictly, aiming to benefit both businesses and customers and give a boost to Maharashtra’s nightlife.
